Who is eligible for simplified naturalization?
A non-Hungarian citizen may be eligible for simplified naturalization if the following conditions are met:
- He or she, or any of his or her ancestors, was a Hungarian citizen, or there is reason to believe that the applicant’s origin is from Hungary.
- He or she demonstrates sufficient knowledge of the Hungarian language.
- He or she has no criminal record and is not subject to criminal proceedings.
- The naturalization does not pose a risk to the public order or national security of Hungary.
Important information about the procedure:
The simplified naturalization procedure does not automatically result in the issuance of a Hungarian passport. After acquiring Hungarian citizenship, applicants must apply separately for a Hungarian passport.
Simplified naturalization is a legal possibility, but submitting an application for citizenship is an individual decision of the applicant.
In order to avoid problems related to insufficient language skills and to prevent abuses experienced in the simplified naturalization procedure, please note the following requirement.
When applying for Hungarian citizenship through simplified naturalization, one of the basic legal requirements is the ability to understand and communicate in Hungarian at a sufficient level. Applicants must be able to present their application independently, without external assistance, and respond to the questions of the consular officer in Hungarian using simple sentences.
If the applicant’s knowledge of the Hungarian language does not reach the required level, a positive decision cannot be expected.
Which documents must be submitted?
Hungarian law stipulates that all vital events of Hungarian citizens (birth, marriage, divorce, death) must be registered in Hungary.
Therefore, applicants must also submit the necessary forms for the registration of their birth, marriage, or divorce in Hungary, if these events have not yet been registered.
The relevant original certificates (full/unabridged versions) must be submitted with Apostille certification issued by the competent authority if they were issued outside Hungary. (Further informations: https://dirco.gov.za/consular-notarial-services/)
For the simplified naturalization procedure, all foreign certificates must be accompanied by an official Hungarian translation.
