Registration of Divorce - Embassy of Hungary

Registration of Divorce

Who can have a divorce registered in Hungary and how?
All Hungarian citizens whose marriage has been dissolved by a foreign court must have the divorce registered in Hungary.

The application may only be submitted in person at the Embassy of Hungary in Pretoria.

What if I do not yet have a Hungarian-issued marriage certificate of the dissolved marriage?
If the marriage has not yet been registered in Hungary, the registration of the marriage and the registration of the divorce must be initiated simultaneously.

Required documents:

  • The original Hungarian-issued marriage certificate.
  • Identity documents of the applicants. If one of the parties is not a Hungarian citizen, he or she must present a valid passport or a certificate of citizenship proving nationality. The Hungarian party must present proof of Hungarian citizenship.
  • Final divorce decree with Apostille certification issued by the territorially competent High Court. (Further informations: https://dirco.gov.za/consular-notarial-services/)
  • Completed registration form.

The decree must be submitted with a Hungarian translation.

The Hungarian translation may be prepared by the Hungarian National Office for Translation and Attestation (further informations: https://www.offi.hu/en); in this case no additional legalization is required. Alternatively, the translation may be prepared by the consul at the Embassy (additional fee applies).

Please note that Apostille attestations issued by a Notary Public are not sufficient to initiate the procedure.

Will my birth name automatically be restored after the divorce is registered?
No. If you wish to change your name after the registration of the divorce, you must submit a separate name change request. Further information is available on our website.
