Who can apply for the verification of his or her Hungarian citizenship?
If you want to verify your citizenship („inherited” by blood from your Hungarian parent) and you are unable to prove your citizenship by the following documents
(Hungarian citizenship can be verified with : valid Hungarian ID card/valid Hungarian passport -if your passport has expired, you may still use it as proof of Hungarian citizenship for one year following the date of its expiry/ valid Hungarian citizenship certificate/ certificate of naturalization, until proven otherwise/ active record in the registry of personal data and addresses - your data is included in the registry if you have a so-called address card or if you previously had a Hungarian personal number. Please note that Hungarian birth and marriage certificates are not proof of Hungarian citizenship)
you have to start this procedure before you can apply for a Hungarian Passport.
If you have proof of your Hungarian citizenship you do not have to have to apply for the verification of the citizenship of your child under the age of six; simply initiate the registration of his or her birth.
Where can I apply?
Citizenship applications may only be submitted in person.
Applications by minors who are 14 years of age and older must be signed by both the minor and his or her parent (both must be present in person). Parents act on behalf of younger children, therefore the child's presence is not necessary.
The application may be submitted in at the Embassy of Hungary in Pretoria.
How much is the fee?
The verification of citizenship is free of charge. (However citizenship certificate has a fee. )
Which form should I fill out?
The form titled „Állampolgárság igazolása iránti kérelem" ("Application for the Verification of Citizenship"). Please fill the form out with a computer or by a blue ink pen in block capitals. Please use full names in the Hungarian name order, e.g., Smith John Thomas instead of John Smith or John T. Smith.

Which documents shall I submit for the verification of my citizenship?
Hungarian law stipulates that all vital statistics events of a Hungarian citizen (birth, marriage, divorce, death) are registered in Hungary. Therefor you also have to submit the forms for registration of your birth / marriage / divorce – and the relevant unabridged certificate affixed with Apostille attestation from the Competent Authority in case they were issued elsewhere than Hungary . Please check the relevant descriptions on our website regarding to those cases.

The nationality procedure takes an average of 8-12 months. The Embassy is unable to speed up the proceedings.
